The temperance movement is a social movement that occur in the 19 th century against the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Women joined the temperance movement because women were abused physcially from their men and/or drunk men from outside. In other words,  women joined the movement because alcohol consumption often increased the frequency and severity of domestic violence and abuse. In addition, men would sometimes squander limited household finances on alcohol.
