In addition to the "natural" occuring radioactive elements, many elements can be exposed to nuclear reactor cores and artificially converted into an element that will later emit radiation. Some of these isotopes are quite useful in medicine and research because they can be created in conditions that generate a pure product. These isotopes are of lighter atomic weight and can be easily combined to form normal molecules and compounds.
