Title: How do I add these vectors to find the magnitude and direction?
Post by: Fireburns92 on Jan 27, 2013
Find the result of adding the following vectors.
A = 18.0 meters at an angle of 6.0°
B = 5.00 meters at an angle of 165.°

I thought I was doing it right, but I guess not cause everytime I checked it, it was wrong.

My personal favorite way to do this is breaking it up into sections. Here's how I would do it:

18cos6 + 5cos165 = 13.07176
18sin6 + 5sin165 = 3.17561

You then use Pythagorean theorem

square root(13.07176)^2 + (3.17561)^2) = 13.451967

That is the length of the vector. to the find the direction you do:

inverse tangent(3.17561/13.07176) = 13.6547 degrees

Is that the answer you should be getting?
