They are alike because they both involve a concentration gradient.  They are different because facilitated diffusion is a passive process, moves down a concentration gradient, requires no energy, and does not involve a carrier molecule within a membrane..

Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Facilitated diffusion is the movement of a substance using a transport molecule from high concentration to low concentration.

Active transport is movement of a substance up a concentration gradient through a selectively permeable membrane using ATP to drive the process.

Diffusion and facilitated diffusion move substances down a concentration gradient and does not require the use of ATP.
