Title: Best host for transduction of the camR gene

You are given three different strains of S. enterica for a transduction experiment.  Strain 1 has a wild-type phenotype, strain 2 has a defect in oligosaccharide synthesis and strain 3 is defective in Histidine synthesis?   Which of these strains make a suitable host for successful transduction of the camR (chloramphenicol resistance) gene using P22?  Give reasons for your answer.

Strain 3 - histidine defective

Here's why:

Chloramphenicol resistance can be found in strain 3.

The structure of chromphenicol resembles histidine, therefore on deficient synthesis, the strain will not be attacked by chloramphenicol and will result in resistance.
