Free trade—in which countries produce and sell products anywhere in the world—can export pollution to less developed countries. Companies could move "dirty industries"—those that have a high risk of pollution, danger to workers, or toxic damage of the environment—to a country where environmental regulations are lacking. Free trade may also make it easier for workers' human rights to be violated. Issues such as child labor, reasonable wages, and overall working conditions must be considered when a company conducts business in countries where protective regulations do not meet Western standards. To ensure that companies make ethical decisions about their global operations, it is increasingly important for industry leaders to have some structured ethical system.
