Title: PhysioEx 9.0 Exercise 4 activity 1

1. The baseline metabolic rate (BMR) of the normal rat was approximately______ ml O2/kg/ hr.
2. True or false: The BMR of all three rats was appr the same before treatment?
3. Which rat had the fastest basal metabolic rate (BMR)?
4. Why did the BMR's differ between the normal rat and the surgically altered rats?
5. If an animal had been thyroidectomized, what hormones would be missing in its blood?
6. If an animal had been hypophysectomized, what effects would you expect to see in the hormone levels in it's blood and in it's BMR?

On the normal rat, the metabolic rate after thyroxine injection is faster than the baseline metabolic rate. The action of thyroxine is to increase the metabolic rate of all cells. On the thyroidectomized rat, the metabolic rate after thyroxine injection is faster than the baseline metabolic rate. The injected thyroxine compensated for the thyroxine lost when the thyroid was removed. On the hypophysectomized rat, the metabolic rate after thyroxine injection is faster than the baseline metabolic rate. The injected thyroxine compensated for the thyroxine lost when the pituitary gland was removed. The pituitary gland did not produce TSH, therefore the thyroid gland did not produce thyroxine.

2. True or false: The BMR of all three rats was appr the same before treatment? (False)
3. Which rat had the fastest basal metabolic rate (BMR)? (Normal Rat)
4. Why did the BMR's differ between the normal rat and the surgically altered rats? )Because if certain hormones that can not be produce or stimulated because of glands that are not present.
5. If an animal had been thyroidectomized, what hormones would be missing in its blood? (Thyroxine and Calcitonin)
6. If an animal had been hypophysectomized, what effects would you expect to see in the hormone levels in it's blood and in it's BMR? Hormone levels would be decreased, BMR would be decreased and  the body could not keep the metabolism and body heat at a normal range.
