1.) The M and N factors are glycoproteins that are found on the surface of red blood cells. Unlike other types of red blood cell antigens, The M and N factors do not cause antibody reactions in human blood transfusions. People with type M blood are homozygous for the M allele, and people with type N blood are homozygous for the N allele. Heterozygous individuals have type MN blood. In a study of population of Inuit living in the Northwest Territories, 512 people have blood type M, 256 had blood type MN, AND 32 has blood type N.

Now as for my questions...

A) Calculate the frequency of each allele, M and N , in the population studied.

B) WHat would be the expected frequency of each genotype in the next generation, assuming that this population is in genetic equilibrium for the trait.

C) In a second study group, the frequencies of the genotypes were 0.306 MM, 0.491 MN, AND 0.203 NN. Could this second study group have, in fact, come from the previously described Inuit population? Explain your answer...

2.) There are two kinds of genetic questions. The majority will be dihybrid crosses, blood typing, and of the pedigree analysis style. You have gained background in these by previously studying Mendelian genetics.

In this unit another type of genetic question is presented. How can you tell the difference between the two broad types of genetic questions. When will you have to use  q2, find the square root to obtain q, then find p and then apply the Hardy Weinberg equation p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1.

If the question asks:     __      in a population; the statement, of a population, then apply the concepts that you have studied in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. This question is about population genetics.  Consider the following question.

Numerical Response:

If the individuals in this pedigree represented a distinct population, how many of the 21 people could be expected to be heterozygous for PKU? 1 mark

Answer: _______ people.

***HINT:
If you are in pedigree analysis mode because you know how to solve these questions you soon encounter a dilemma.

PKU is autosomal recessive, see page 613. This chart appears to be sex-linked as more males have PKU. If you actually try to fill in the genotype for all the individuals you will soon run into an individual whom you will not kno, if they are homozygous or what the question is asking for, heterozygous.

Upon analysis of the question, finding the logic word heterozygous in a population of 21, and then realizing, yes this is a 2pq  question.

Now the question arises:  "Is 4/21 q or q2 ?" Now that you have arrived at 2pq, can you complete the next step, to find how many people?

HINT: p = 0.5635642195; a number you arrived at?

Realistically, the pedigree chart is not even necessary to complete this question.

I only have A so far.

2(512) +256 = 1280 = M
2(32) +256 = 320 = N

Is this right? I'm very confused right now?
