Myelinated nerves are covered in myelin. Myelin is made in the central nervous system by oligodendrocytes and in the peripheral nervous system by Schwann cells. It allows neurons to conduct impulses much faster via "saltatory conduction" where the impulse sort of 'skips' along the nerve and only fires action potentials at unmyelinated spots called Nodes of Ranvier. |
