Title: CHE 318 A filter cake is extruded onto a screen in the form of cylinders 1/4 inch in diameter
Post by: cloveb on Sep 19, 2017
A filter cake is extruded onto a screen in the form of cylinders 1/4 inch in diameter and 4 inches long. The dry solid density is 120 lb/ft3. The solid loading is 8 pound of dry solid per square foot of screen surface. The bed porosity is 60%. Air at dry bulb temperature of 120oF and the wet bulb temperature of 80oF is passed through the bed (through circulation) at a superficial velocity of 3.5 ft/s. How long will it take to dry the solids from 20 to 10% moisture content assuming that the equilibrium moisture content is insignificant and the drying will be under constant rate drying?
Note that the heat transfer coefficient, h, for through circulation under the given condition of air velocity can be expressed as in the following correlation:

hd/k=1.17Re0.585 Pr1/3

where d is the characteristic length (diameter of the particle for this case), k is the thermal conductivity of the transfer phase Re is the particle Reynolds number, and Pr is the Prandtl number.
