The levels of FSH and LH are usually controlled by negative feedback by high levels of estrogen and progesterone in approximately 28-day cycles. Menopausal women no longer have the ability to produce high levels of these hormones because they are out of mature eggs - the outer coating of the eggs produce most of the female sex hormones. Without the negative feedback, the LH and FSH levels remain high
