Explain what a standard candle is and how it could be used to determine a galaxy's distance.

A standard candle is an object with a well known luminosity, such as a Type I supernova. If we see a standard candle in a distance galaxy, we can measure it's apparent brightness and use the inverse square law to determine its distance.
