The text defines transitions as words, phrases or sentences that help listeners follow the development of the speaker’s thoughts and arguments and get an idea of where they are in their speech. There are four types of transitions listed: connectives, previews, reviews, and signposts. Connective transitions connect the major parts of the speech. Preview transitions help the audience get an idea of where the speaker is going, i.e. “In conclusion…” Review transitions also serve as internal summaries, summing up the contents of the speech so far. Signpost transitions are individual words that tell listeners where the speaker is in their speech, using terms as “first, next, therefore,” etc.
