Title: Physioex 9.0 Exercise 1 review sheet

Hey I am stuck on the first exercise review sheet question 13.

By what mechanism does the active transport of sodium lead to osmotic flow of water across a membrane?

Osmosis = The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane (with the concentration gradient, ie from areas of high concentration to an area of low concentration).

As it is diffusion, the rate of osmosis relies on the concentration gradient (among other things).

Active transport = The movement of molecules AGAINST the concentration gradient with the use of energy (eg, ATP)

As sodium is transported, that would alter the concentration of water in that area, for example, if sodium was being transported into the cell, the concentration of water would decrease. This would allow for more rapid osmosis of water into the cell.
