Title: Potentiation
Post by: Ray25 on Nov 5, 2010
Hi All!

I need to describe the processes involved in the "potentiation of an action potential". While I have a fairly good understanding of the general processes involved in the firing of neurons, I'm confused as to what "potentiation" means in this context and how I should explain the processes in terms of this potentiation..

Thanks in advance for your help on this!

Best,
Ray

Potentiation is when the combined effects of two or more substances are greater than the sum of the effect of each used alone. In terms of action potentials, it's when the firing of two or more action potentials contribute to the overall effect - in other words, they are summed up to propagate the signal and the total is greater than the sum of its parts.
