Title: When does prevention of osteoporosis start?
Post by: Pimpnorris on Sep 23, 2013
When one thinks of osteoporosis, one might be prompted to think of old ladies.  Unfortunately, anyone at any age can be subjected to osteoporosis (although it is typically seen in postmenopausal women and in older aged individuals).  According to the textbook, osteoporosis is a disease in which bone is absorbed faster than it is built, causing fragile bones which break easier than normal.  We are told that osteoporosis can be prevented (or at least delayed) by first getting the right amount of calcium supplied our bones while it is still increasing in density (hopefully around early adulthood).  Second, we are told to mind our soda intake as the acids in them wear down bone density.  Finally, we are told to get plenty of weight-bearing exercise as this is thought to increase bone mass above normal values and give greater resistance against age-related bone loss.  So when does prevention begin?  Throughout our entire lives, first with getting the right amount of nutrients (Hopefully, we'll be provided for as infants and throughout childhood), avoiding the wrong types of foods and beverages, and maintaining weight bearing exercises throughout our lives.
