Title: Use the data to determine the DNA consensus sequence for the 16 nucleotides
Post by: fodog414 on Nov 9, 2013
The following table lists α-globin and β-globin gene sequences for the 12 nucleotides preceding the start codon and the first nucleotide following the start codon. The data are for 16 vertebrate globin genes reported by Kozak (1987). The sequences are written from -12 to +4 with the start codon sequence in capital letters.

Part A
Use the data to determine the DNA consensus sequence for the 16 nucleotides (-12 to +4) surrounding the start codon in the 16 selected α-globin and β-globin genes. Assume the most prevalent nucleotide at any position is incorporated into the consensus sequence.
Express your answer as a sequence of 16 DNA nucleotides separated by dashes. Example: 5'-A-C-T-G-3'

5'-C-C-A-G-C-T-G-C-A-C-C-G-C-A-T-G-3' not right only one attempt left :(

5'-C-C-C-G-C-C-G-C-C-A-C-C-A-U-G-G-3'

All you need to do is select the nucleotide in each position that appears the most frequently, and to make sure to include the "A-U-G" start codon sequence at the correct position, between the -1 and +1 nucleotide position. It doesn't appear in this sequence, but if there were any T's present, they would have to be denoted as "U" since you need to write the cognate RNA sequence.

Can anyone actually explain how to do this? I have a similar problem to do so just the answer won't help me.
