I’m wondering if anyone has any tips for figuring this out?

Here is what I’m working on: we did an experiment where we were given an unknown substance containing chloride. We then separated the chloride via precipitation and filtration and got its mass. Then we calculated the percent composition of the chloride in the sample. In our case it was 55.42% +/- 0.1418.

So what is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable?
What is the control?
What would be a potential hypothesis?

We performed three trials using Silver Nitrate to extract the chloride. What are things that would be a control in an experiment? If the sample stays the same is the sample the control or is that an independent variable because the masses change in each trial?

Not using silver nitrate would be a control. That is, can chloride be extracted without it. This tests whether the results were a 'fluke' or not, and whether or not they didn't happen on their own.
