I think what they're failing to realize is that most people are at least to some degree aware that Hollywood is a satire/parody of real life. The thing is real life sucks and is entirely unfair, and I think you would be hard pressed to find people who would say that some kind of occasional escape from the straight up horror of "real life" is not a good thing. I think it's something (escapism) that's hard-wired into human beings as a whole, hence the imagination. That said, I'm also sure there's an unhealthy amount of people who get or are lost in the fantasy and we definitely probably do indulge ourselves in escapism a bit too much as a country.
All in all: it's interesting to ponder but it's something I'm pretty sure we're aware of.
I couldn't agree more, the documentary makes some valid points but its formed from a subjective perspective bias focusing on, and exaggerating, the negative aspects of western culture. It also paints a very dogmatic and naïve picture of westerners, as if we're all zombies following the garbage that's produced by mainstream media without question. However, for the most part, this is very untrue.
Although media is heavily mediated and controlled, there is enough free information out there for people to make an informed decision about the way they want to live within a free western society. (Providing of course they're open minded and intelligent enough not to get brainwashed by one ideology such as a religion or Hollywood's fantasy world).
