(Answer to question 1 )

Pelycosaurs were finback reptiles, which became the dominant reptiles in the Permian. They were the
first land-dwelling vertebrates to become diverse and widespread.

(Answer to question 2 )

On land, animals had to worry about reproduction, desiccation, gravity, and the extraction of oxygen
from the atmosphere.

(Answer to question 3 )

The development of predators had a major impact because organisms that had previously not needed
defense mechanisms either developed defense systems or suffered great population losses.

(Answer to question 4 )

Lobe-finned fish, particularly the crosspterygians, may have been part of the transition from fish to
amphibians.

(Answer to question 5 )

Almost all major invertebrate phyla evolved during the Cambrian, although many were represented by
only a few species.
