A patient with leukemia has blood cells that are not dividing properly and are out of control. Treatment consists of a bone marrow transplant. How would this help?

The improperly dividing cells must be destroyed or they will continue to cause problems. The only way to ensure that all of the leukemia cells are removed is to destroy all of the blood cells. Then, a new supply of functioning blood cells has to be implanted to restore the blood cell population. Since the stem cells in the bone marrow give rise to all forms of blood cells, the transplant would replace the defective cells.
