Selecting a text for or by a student at a just right level of challenge will prevent word identification from overwhelming the reader. As a rule of thumb, a reader should encounter no more than four errors per hundred words of text. This maximum number of errors provides opportunities for a reader to be strategic in using word identification strategies and does not present so many roadblocks that meaning (and a student's enjoyment of reading) is sacrificed.

Answer to #4

The classroom library must be well designed, with partitions, ample space, comfortable furnishings, open-faced and traditional bookshelves, and book-related props and displays. Teachers will know quickly whether their classroom library meets the well-designed criteria; inviting classroom libraries are heavily used by the children.

Answer to #5

Read storybooks interactively with children. Expose children to reading and writing experiences; point out print in the child's environment. Make sure that children have access to books and writing materials. Value your child's initial efforts at reading and writing.
