In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the stimulus to breathe might be removed because of a too high oxygen level in the blood. Nitrogen keeps the alveoli open. High concentrations of oxygen displace nitrogen from the alveoli, leading to collapsed alveoli or atelectasis. Oxygen in high concentrations is toxic to the alveolar cells that produce surfactant.
