Beecher (1955) compared World War II soldiers' experiences of pain on the battlefield with the pain experienced by civilians. He found that for injuries of similar severity, approximately 80 of the civilians requested painkillers and only 33 of the soldiers requested pain killers. The stress of battle, and possibly the realization that their injuries meant the soldiers were returning home, seems to lessen the soldiers' pain.
