DNA is the repository of genetic information in all organisms except some viruses, which use RNA as their genetic material... (that an organism uses RNA as their genetic material, and in doing so convert their RNA back to a DNA template using the enzyme reverse transcriptase, is the exception).
Prior to the discovery of RNA viruses and Reverse transcriptase, only DNA was thought to be able to act as the genetic material.
