Global interconnectedness makes communication easy. Location on a river or seacoast is not vital because we have jet planes, television, cell phones, and the Internet. Fossil fuels make it easy to commute, as well as to import and export resources, goods, and waste. All of these make it easy to live farther apart from people and places with whom you need to interact. Other reasons why urban dwellers move to the suburbs include the desire to escape the stress, noise, pollution, crime and traffic of a crowded city.
