The coastline here is clearly submergent with a number of drowned river valleys. However, these coastlines are backed for many kilometers by virtually flat coastal plains. The occurrence of fjords requires two factors working in combination. First there must be mountainous stream valleys meeting the sea; there was no glaciation near this part of the Atlantic coast. Second, the mountains must have been glaciated in a way that the valleys are scooped far below sea level and then submerged when the glaciers melt
