Liver cells convert glucose to glycogen, which is then stored within the liver and the muscles. This short-term store is used to fuel the brain and is rapidly depleted. Glucagon secretion catalyzes the conversion of glycogen to glucose. The long-term energy store is within fat cells and is composed of triglycerides. Glycerol is a major product of triglyceride metabolism and is converted to glucose within the liver.
