How does landscape ecology differ from ecosystem and community ecology? What questions might an ecosystem ecologist ask about a forest? What questions might a community ecologist ask about the same forest? Now, what kinds of questions would a landscape ecologist ask about a forested landscape?

Ecosystem and community ecology are generally focused on understanding a single type of community or ecosystem. Landscape ecology aims to understand the exchanges that occur between various ecosystems within a landscape and the forces that control the distribution and dynamics of those ecosystems. A community ecologist would study patterns of species diversity, food web structure, how keystone species or physical disturbance influences species diversity, and composition within the forest. An ecosystem ecologist studying the same forest would be concerned with processes such as primary production, energy flow, and nutrient cycling. The landscape ecologist studies the size, shapes, and distributions of forest patches and the movement of materials, energy and nutrients between forest patches and other ecosystems in the landscape.
