Exploratory analysis (EA) is subjective, whereas a hypothesis objective. EA tries to answer "How can I optimally explain or describe variation in my data set?" while for a hypothesis, your main motive is the answer "can I reject the null hypothesis that species are unrelated to a postulated environmental factor or factors?"

That being said, you cannot come up with a hypothesis until raw data has been collected. This step takes place after the exploratory analysis has been made. You could try to predict the answer, which occurs AFTER the hypothesis is made.
