If you deliberately and willfully hide income from the IRS, falsely claim deductions, or otherwise cheat the government out of taxes it is owed (for example, not paying your taxes at all), you are committing tax evasion. Tax evasion is illegal and the consequences are dire, including penalties, fines, interest charges, and a possible jail sentence.
