Why do Coxiella show variable Gram stain results?

i am researching this question for my homework and am stumped. I'm pretty sure it's gram negative but i don't know why it would show both?

Coxiella can show variable Gram stain results because of its ultrastructure and chemical composition of the cell wall. The large cell variant stains gram negative while the small cell variant stains gram positive. Overall, Coxiella is gram negative.
