Women hold fewer than 20 of the nation's elective offices. There has never been a woman president or vice president of the United States. The vast majority of senators and representatives in Congress are men. It is a rarity when a woman is elected governor in a state. Men still control the political processes to nominate candidates and to campaign for their election. The higher the status of an elective office, usually, the lower the percentage of women holding that position. The potential political clout of women, however, is immense because they constitute a majority of the nation's voters.
Women hold only 2 of the top management positions in American corporations and just 6 of the seats on corporate boards of directors. Even successful female executives often complain about an invisible glass ceiling that seems to lock them out of the key positions of power. One study, based on interviews with 100 male and female executives from three major U.S. corporations, concluded that there was a clear double standard in promotions and that women had to perform significantly better than their male counterparts to get ahead.
