The membranous covering of the central nervous system (CNS), referred to as meninges, lines the cranium and covers the brain and spinal cord. The three distinct layers are the dura mater (in direct contact with the cranium), arachnoid (a weblike space), and pia mater (in direct contact with the surface of the brain).
