All connective tissues have a ratio of ground substance, a gel-like binding substance, in their extra-cellular matrix, the combination of water, carbohydrates, proteins, and in the case of bones, minerals, that lies between cells. The higher ratio of ground substance creates a more fluid substance, like blood. If it has a low ratio of ground substance, it can be as hard as bone, another connective tissue. It has lots of minerals, calcium and phosphorus in its extra-cellular matrix. Because molecularly the type of tissue that forms the blood contains the same structures as those in other connective tissues and so it comes from the same parent tissues.
