A line in the spectrum of atomic mercury has a wavelength of 258 nm. When mercury emits a photon of light at this wavelength, the frequency of this light is:

8.61 × 10–16 s–1

7.70 × 10–19 s–1

1.16 × 1015 s–1

77.3 s–1

none of these are correct

The wavelength and frequency of all types of waves (not just electromagnetic waves) are related according to the equation:

wavespeed = wavelength * frequency

For a photon, the wave speed is the speed of light = 2.998*10^8 m/s, so

wavelength = (2.998*10^8 m/s)/(254*10^-9 m)
wavelength = 1.18*10^15 Hz
