Cellular Respiration and Metabolism
1. If a substance makes the lipid bilayer of the inner mitochondrial membrane highly permeable to H+ protons will that cause you to gain or lose weight and why.
2. If a substance increases the number of free hydrogen ions or protons in the intermembrane space of the mitochondria will that cause you to gain or lose weight and why.
3. If a substance partially blocks the pyruvate transporter, interfering with the transport of pyruvate into the mitochondria will that cause you to gain or lose weight and why.

1. weight loss
ATP is produced in inner mitochondrial membrane by maintaining electro-chemical gradient. When the inner mitochondrial membrane is permeable to H+ , electochemical gradient is lost and so ATP is not produced. This results in mobilization of carbohydrates and fats, since regulatory pathways are programmed to maintain concentrations of those substrates at set levels. Since the energy is lost as heat, biosynthesis is not promoted, and weight loss occurs.
2. weight gain
Increasing the protons in the intermembrane space will increase the proton gradient in the mitochondria, which will thereby have more protons pumped through ATP synthase, generating more ATP as a result. Generated heat will be increased with more protons and therefore increase metabolism, which will increase weight loss.
3. weight loss
Pyruvate accepts Protons, which keeps the glycolysis active. If pyruvate cannot be transported into the mitochondria, then very little ATP can be generated and also, no heat will be generated from metabolic processes. This will cause a lower body temperature and therefore promote weight gain.
