(Answer to Q. 1)  Answer: Empirical research has found some evidence for some of the defense mechanisms. However, they are often under different names and work in somewhat different ways than Sigmund Freud hypothesized. There is considerable evidence for reaction formation and denial, and some for projection, but little for displacement or sublimation.

(Answer to Q. 2)  Answer: 1) Affiliative humor makes others laugh and brings people together. 2) Self-enhancing humor is used to help someone look and feel better. 3) Aggressive humor mocks or teases others. 4) Self-defeating humor is used to mock oneself.

(Answer to Q. 3)  Answer: Humor can be a somewhat healthy defense mechanism, most of the time. Humor is not harmlessone person's joke can be another person's cruel attack. However, humor can diffuse uncomfortable situations or help people cope with other negative experiences.
