Paid search is a process by which advertisers pay websites and portals to place ads in or near relevant search results based on key words. For example, if you Google running shoes you will find links to Onlineshoes.com and Zappos.com which is another e-shoe dealer. Paid search can also be fine tuned a web-user's search to focus on relevant and specific sites. An example is when an astronomy buff enters the word Saturn and the paid search results are for the planet not the car.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a process whereby the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines is improved based on surfer's profiles. The more surfers visit a site, the more likely the site is to be presented in an individual surfer's search results. (No direct example is given in the text.)

So, paid search is an action of an advertiser but SEO results from consumer behavior on the Web.

There are four main media used to communicate with consumers on the Internet: electronic mail, Usenet, and the World Wide Web.

Email allows users to communicate much as they do using standard mail. Some marketers have used this function of the Internet to communicate their messages. A variety of companies are collecting email addresses and profiles that will allow advertisers to direct email to a specific group. However, widespread email advertising has not yet materialized due to significant consumer resistance to marketers' direct mailings to personal email addresses.

Usenet is a collection of discussion groups in cyberspace. People can read messages pertaining to a given topic, post new messages, and answer messages. For advertisers, this is an important source of consumers who care about certain topics. Usenet represents a great word-of-mouth channel.

The World Wide Web is a universal database of information available to most Internet users, and its graphical environment makes navigation simple and exciting. Of all the options available for Internet advertisers, the Web holds the greatest potential. It allows for detailed and full-color graphics, audio transmission, the delivery of in-depth messages, 24-hour availability, and two-way information exchanges between the advertiser and customer. There is one great difference between the Web and other cyberadvertising vehicles: It is the consumer who actively searches for the advertiser's home page.
