 A. Physical attractiveness
  B. Net worth
  C. Age
  D. Intelligence

Q. 2

The video describes a study that found no statistical difference in student graduation rates between those who submitted SAT scores and those who did not. When the researchers looked at the graduation rates of these two groups, what sample statistics did they most likely look at?
 A. The sample means of the two groups.
  B. The sample proportions of the two groups.

Q. 3

The video describes a study that found no statistical difference in student GPAs between those who submitted SAT scores and those who did not. When the researchers looked at the GPAs of these two groups, what sample statistics did they most likely look at?
 A. The sample means of the two groups.
  B. The sample proportions of the two groups.

Q. 4

Why does the video say the College Board considers the SAT test essential?
 A. The College Board makes a lot of money administering the test.
  B. Combining students' SAT scores and high school GPAs provides the best prediction of how well the students will do in their first year of college.
  C. The SAT scores provide the best prediction of a student's potential earning capacity.
  D. College admission officials need the SAT test scores in order to predict which students will have the intellectual curiosity and drive to be successful students.

Q. 5

The video says that researchers at the University of Michigan found that having close community ties can reduce heart attack risk for those over 50 by 22. Which of the following describes a 22 decrease in risk?
 A. Risk of a heart attack of those with close community ties: 0.08 . Risk of a heart attack of those without close community ties: 0.10.
  B. Risk of a heart attack of those with close community ties: 0.10 . Risk of a heart attack of those without close community ties: 0.08.
  D. Risk of a heart attack of those with close community ties: 0.40 . Risk of a heart attack of those without close community ties: 0.18.
  E. Risk of a heart attack of those with close community ties: 0.18 . Risk of a heart attack of those without close community ties: 0.40.

Q. 6

The video presents various estimated statistics regarding health. Which of the following statistics would be expressed by an estimate of the population mean ()?
 A. The number of hours of sleep a teenager gets per night.
  B. The risk of heart attack among men greater than 50.
  C. The risk of obesity among teenagers.
  D. The proportion of high school students who report using sunscreen.

Answer to #1

A.Physical attractiveness

FEEDBACK:
The video says that respondents ranked financial responsibility as important as physical attractiveness and compatibility when choosing a long term partner.

Answer to #2

B.The sample proportions of the two groups.

FEEDBACK:
A graduation rate describes the percentage (or proportion) of a particular group who graduated. So when researchers compare the graduation rates of two groups, they are comparing the sample proportions of the two groups they are studying.

Answer to #3

A.The sample means of the two groups.

FEEDBACK:
A GPA is a quantitative variable, meaning that you would compare the sample means of this variable of these two groups, not sample proportions. However, if instead they said that they found no statistical difference between the two groups in the proportions of students who had a GPA higher than 3.0, then they would be looking at sample proportions.

Answer to #4

B. Combining students' SAT scores and high school GPAs provides the best prediction of how well the students will do in their first year of college.

FEEDBACK:
This is a paraphrased quote from the video. It states: The College Board calls the SAT test essential because: combining test scores with a student's high school GPA offers the best prediction of how well a college freshman will do in their first year.

Answer to #5

A. Risk of a heart attack of those with close community ties: 0.08 . Risk of a heart attack of those without close community ties: 0.10.

FEEDBACK:
While the description of the reduction in risk is fairly typical in this video, it's really hard to interpret. Usually, a reduction in risk is expressed as a percentage change. That is, if they report the risk was reduced by 22, that means that if the risk in one group was, say, .10, the risk in the other groups is .10 - .22.10, or .08 . This is typical because often the risk is low in the first place, so saying the risk is reduced by 22 sounds like a much larger reduction than saying the risk was reduced from 10 to 8 (an absolute reduction of 2.) In general, these numbers are very hard to express and even harder to interpret.

Answer to #6

A. The number of hours of sleep a teenager gets per night.

FEEDBACK:
The population mean () is an expression of an average number, such as the number of kids per family, the average weight or height of a woman, or the number of hours per sleep a teenager gets per night. All of the estimated statistics presented in the video were percentages--that is, estimates of a population proportion, or p, expressed as a percentage. A risk is another word for a probability which is estimated using a proportion. That is, if your risk of having a heart attack is 1 in 5 (or .2), that is usually estimated by collecting a sample of people from a particular population and counting how many people in that sample who had a heart attack and dividing by the number of people in the sample. That estimated population proportion is also used as an estimate of the probability (i.e., risk) someone from that population will have a heart attack in the future. In other words, the words proportion, probability, percentage and risk are all essentially referring to different flavors of estimates of the same parameter, p.
