Answer to #1

In 2008, the concept of anthropogenic biomes were articulated. These are based on human-altered ecosystems and are an attempt to more accurately portray the terrestrial biosphere (actual vegetation as compared to potential vegetation). These biomes result from ongoing human interaction within an ecosystem. They link land-use practices, such as agriculture, forestry, and urbanization to the biome concept. The concept of the anthropogenic biome is not to replace the terrestrial biome classification, rather offer a different perspective.

Students' answers will vary on the anthropogenic biome in their area.

Answer to #3

Each year, an area the size of the state of Wisconsin is deforested in the tropical rainforest (169,000 km2). Because of poor soil fertility in the tropical rain forests, cleared areas are typically abandoned after a couple of years. It then requires between 100 and 250 years for dominant trees to reestablish. Nonetheless, the tropical rain forests (despite their relatively small size) account for 50 of the world's species and approximately 50 of the remaining forest. This loss is a threat to global biodiversity.

Answers will vary depending on the geographic location of students. For instance, individuals in the Great Plains might discuss the midlatitude grassland biome, associated mollisols, and precipitation gradient, whereas someone in the eastern portion of the U.S. might discuss the midlatitude broadleaf and mixed forest, associated ultisols, and humid subtropical climate.
