Answer to #1

D
Throughout the chapter and in related readings and references, the definition of health is referred to as more than just the absence of disease (response A). Response B addresses only one aspect of health promotion and is not a standard that measures health. Financial security (response C) can positively affect one's ability to access health promotion services, but it is not a discriminating factor for defining health. The maintenance of independence in self-care is the best answer.

Answer to #2

C
The halo effect allows one event or trait to influence the entire evaluation, in this case, Suzanne's recent behaviors. The objectivity of the evaluation is being clouded by the halo behavior. Evaluations need to be comprehensive regarding behaviors and skills.

Answer to #3

C
Years ago, restraints were considered a safety measure for elderly patients, especially very frail patients and demented patients, to keep them from wandering and possibly falling. Research has shown, however, that these assumptions were incorrect. Restraints often reduce functional capacity; create problems with some body systems; and result in injuries, such as asphyxiation, when patients try to struggle out of the restraints. Response C is the correct answer to this question because restraints tend to depersonalize care and result in a paternalistic or controlling attitude toward the patient.

Answer to #4

C
Changing the levels of chemicals in the brain is the major function of psychotropic medications. Responses A, B, and D all are disadvantages of using psychotropic medications.

Answer to #5

C
The leniency error contributes to a less-than-accurate evaluation. The manager must be honest, fair, and objective. An evaluation is a tool to help an employee improve. The evaluation should commend his reliability and not ask him to change his personality but ask him to be aware of the impact he has on others.

Answer to #6

B
A crisis manager does not take time to plan. Crisis managers foster anxiety in staff. Crisis management is an ineffective method for managing and can be avoided by planning.
