I'm doing an assignment where I read an article about genetics and explain it in a nutshell slideshow presentation. In the article it says, "They mapped chemical marks on the DNA that determined which genes they expressed". Tried searching up what a chemical mark was but couldn't find anything.

Hi Craterface

They are referring to DNA methylation.

DNA methylation is a chemical mark that is added to DNA at different positions during gestation. DNA methylation is part of the “epigenetic” program of our genes. When DNA methylation happens at several important positions in genes it can silence the function of the gene.

Does that help?
