Methane can become oxidized in the absence of oxygen when it is coupled to the reduction of another compound, such as sulfate (SO42-). A consortium containing an anoxic methanotrophic archaeon can first oxidize methane, transfer the electrons to a sulfate-reducing bacterium with an organic intermediate, and the bacterium will create a reduced product (H2S). This anoxic process of oxidizing methane yields relatively low levels of free energy.
