The secularization of religion refers to a process by which spiritual concerns are replaced by worldly concerns. As a cult or a sect changes to adjust to its member's upward social class mobility, it becomes a church. When the church attempts to harmonize its religious beliefs with the culture, members who are not upwardly mobile feel dissatisfied and tend to splinter off and form a new cult or sect. This cycle tends to repeat itself. Examples of the secularization of religion include Methodists abandoning prohibitions against members dancing and going to movies, the Episcopal church electing an openly gay bishop, and the ordination of women.
