Anglicans were perhaps a majority and supported both independence from Rome and the preservation of traditional Catholic religious forms. A Protestant minority known as Puritans wanted more radical religious change, including the elimination of Catholic practices and the leadership of bishops. Finally, a significant number of English people remained Catholic and hoped for England’s return to the Roman Catholic Church.
