6. A researcher hypothesizes that individuals who
listen to classical music will score differently
from the general population on a test of spatial
ability. On a standardized test of spatial ability,
= 58. A random sample of 14 individuals who
listen to classical music is given the same test.
Their scores on the test are 52, 59, 63, 65, 58, 55,
62, 63, 53, 59, 57, 61, 60, 59.
a. Is this a one- or two-tailed test?
b. What are H0 and Ha for this study?
c. Compute tobt.
d. What is tcv?
e. Should H0 be rejected? What should the
researcher conclude?
f. Determine the 95% confidence interval for
the population mean, based on the sample
mean.

a. Should be two tailed since you want to know if the mean from listening to classical music is any lower or higher than u=58.

b. Ho: Mux=58 ( meaning the mean from the group listening to classical music is not statistically different from the mean score from the general public)

H1: Mux =/ 58 ( meaning they are both statistically different. It is just the opposte of saying NOT Ho:Mux=58)

c. z = Xbar - mux / standard deviation.   Xbar= sample mean from the 14 observation and tandard deviation from the 14 sample. Use this calculator to calculate these values easily.

http://easycalculation.com/statistics/standard-deviation.php

If you are stuck, let me know. Also, it is good to know how to derive these statistical parameters in case you dont have this calculator handy or if you want to know how to derive them without a calculator.

d. Look at the z table under 95% significance. Since the z table gives the values of the area under the curve from Z to Z=0 ( middle), you need to divide 95% into two equal parts, or 47.5% or simply 0.475. Now look for the corresponding z value at 0.475.Z is +- 1.96

e. To reject or accept, you need to calculate part c. and determine the values for z and compare the number with 1.96. If that value is outside of -+1.96, then reject the NULL. Otherwise, accept.

f. (56 , 60)

Hope this helps you!
