How much of a 10% cream must be mixed with a 0.5% cream to prepare 4 oz. of a 3.75% cream?

Let x and y be volumes in ounces of the different creams, and convert the percentages into decimals.

10% / 100 -> 0.10
0.5% / 100 -> 0.005

x(.10) + y(.005) = 4(0.0375)

x + y = 4

This is a system of linear equations.

The answer is:

x = 1.36 oz of 10%
y = 2.63 oz of 0.5%
