This gives the student a certain breadth and freedom to choose various topics to emphasize. Generally they will begin by drawing a distinction between normative personality development, which occurs to most people, and nonnormative, which is unique to small groups or to individuals. The emphasis here will be on how experiences affect the course of development. Not surprisingly research suggests that individuals who have fewer negative experiences, such as failing a course or experiencing a divorce experiences fewer negative emotions. Other research suggests a link between life experience outcomes and other developmental variables such as the correlation between increased hostility over their adulthood and increased obesity, social isolation, decreased physical health, etc. A study of veterans even suggested a link between increased Neuroticism and increased mortality rates.
