In Japan, employers are required to measure the waistlines of their employees, and anyone whose waist exceeds the allowed size is put on a diet by their employer. Full-time employees in France are guaranteed 5 weeks of vacation. India raised the age of employment to 18. These are just a few examples of how the policies and laws of the land play a significant role in the health of a nation. Employment law is just one example of how social laws impact health.

Pick any country other than the United States and review social laws in that nation. Provide a brief overview of their rules and how those rules may influence their citizens’ health. Use evidence to support your position. Use the name of the country as your subject line. Do not include insurance or medical provision as part of your analysis; the focus this week is on social policy.

Are you sure Kenya is a good choice?

I know you've chosen Kenya, but Kenya lacks a social system. For example, unlike in the United States, a system where you can earn unemployment earning until you find a new job after getting fired, for example, doesn't exist. Further, Kenya remains a highly unequal society by income, by gender, and by geographical location. Poverty is highest in the arid and semi-arid areas that cover about 80% of the land area and are inhabited by about 20% of the population. Poverty also affects the coastal area, which receives fewer resources. Rapid population growth is another major challenge, further complicated by high unemployment rates especially among the youth. More than 70 per cent of Kenya’s population are below the age of 30 and the population under age 14 alone amounts to 43 percent.
